Why I Am Lame!

Well, my Welcome Back to the Hellmouth ficathon entry is running good and late - I should have something later today, but not too early. The current plot bunny is something I only came up with yesterday, by brainstorming with Toys, as a replacement for the story I'd been working on which absolutely refused to gel. As a result, though, I've ended up writing very first AU story, which I'm pretty excited about. And it should be funny, which the first story definitely wasn't. More fun to write, most definitely.

In other news, the duckling action in the park continues. Behold the fuzziness!

I love the little guy on the right looking up.

So cute!

I keep wishing I had a faster camera or a longer lens, because they were really close. I could've gotten some CuteOverload quality pics if I was wielding something a little more pro instead of a pocket rig. Ah, someday.

*g* Given the emergency beta request I just got I don't think you're alone in running behind.

Cute photo! We have one pair of ducks on our pond but they don't seem to be nesting. The geese on the other hand are plentiful. There's one pair with 18 goslings! I think they ended up being permanent day care workers because I'm quite sure those were separate broods before.

Eighteen! That's a whole lotta goslings.

There are two sets of goslings at the lake here right now, one a little older than the other - it's funny how gawky they get after only a little while, all stretched out, only still with the baby fuzz. They're like slouchy teenage geese! The ducks in our area seem to have gotten a late start, but there are a lot of them - at least three sets of nine or more.

It's really funny how the fic inspirations come and go - when I signed up, I had all sorts of ideas, and then... nada.

Yeah the ducklings stay cute longer than the geese. They're really unappealing after about a month and before their adult feathers come in. But they grow so quickly it's astounding. What's funny about the ducks is how they seem to always be vocalizing to one another -- a kind of constant murmuring quack-quack-quack.

Duckies! Aww.

Those crazy fic brainbursts happen to me all the time -- I'll slave for months over one unbudging idea, and then blam! and I'll have a totally different story pounded out in four nights. Silly brain. Good luck with yours!

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'm sure I'll need it. And I know exactly what you mean about the unbudging idea. Sometimes I think the ones that don't want to move are doing it for a reason, and other times... ah, who knows. Wrong alignment of the stars. Best just to go with the one that's sparking instead.

Whenever it is, I'll be looking forward to it. :-) (and I'm still writing mine, so...)

Also: Duckies!

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-13 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, since this one's for you, I'm really hoping you'll like it! Keep your fingers crossed for me - it might actually end up being sort of a long fic if all goes well. (And it really does help to hear that other people are still working on theirs!)

Duckies are excellent mood lifters, I've found. I can't look at them without melting into a little puddle of awwww.

The ducklings are so cute! I wish mallards were better parents.

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
They're bad parents? How so?

From what I understand, they're not terribly good at keeping their offspring alive.

I get daily evidence of this when I walk along the canal to work. Every time I see a particular mallard family there are fewer ducklings.

True. I think he's singing "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head." he just has that look about him.

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Now I'm going to hear that song whenever I look at the picture.

I just have to comment on the cuteness of ducklings! Wee!

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't they just the stripiest little fuzzballs? Awww...

Maybe he saw God.

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! If so, I worry - think the god of that lake at the moment is smiling particularly on turtles, because their numbers are exploding. Ducks seem to be doing okay, but turtles have the run of the place.

Good luck with the writing! And also, the ducks are pure, industrial strength cute.

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'll be needing the luck.

So CUTE!!!

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2007-05-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't they, though? I went by again today and there's more. Now I've got a range of ages to look at, from new little fuzzies to the slightly older tween duckies. Adorable!
