Actually, it probably is a little obscure - my gut said Buffy's first reaction would probably be to blame herself for just about everything that's come up this night, whether any of it is actually her fault or not. She's thinking back to the amulet again, and underestimating Spike's own desire to wear it. But then she's having a little trouble figuring out the difference between the personal issues and the big picture ones in general.
I'd say that's a manoeuvre that's likely to bite W&H in the ass, in the long run.

Thanks for your kind words on the endless dialogue. This story has been talk, talk, talky, and it's still entirely possible that I'll do a big clean-up edit version for my website once the whole thing is finally done.
