I'm Sure Everyone's Watching the Oscars, But...

It's Birthday Time!

A Very Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] asta77, Belated Very Happy Birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] paratti, [livejournal.com profile] girlpire, and [livejournal.com profile] constance_b, and Happy Birthday (tomorrow) to [livejournal.com profile] crackers4jenn!!!

I've no real patience for award shows myself, but I was pleased to note in passing when checking IMDB on the cast of the weirdo sci-fi film I rented for this evening (Space Truckers, with Dennis Hopper, and not too bad zero-grav effects for a cheesy B-film) that A.R. Rahman picked up the musical score award for Slumdog Millionaire, and while I can't say I've been following his career closely, I have been aware of him as a composer since I saw a Bollywood film called Muthu, the Dancing Maharaja, which did indeed have fantastic music. Aw, and now I see from IMDB that he's known as the John Williams of Indian cinema. Good show.

(Sorry for the randomness, but I'm really trying to make myself use LJ as more of a note pad. If I hold out for the carefully thought-out post every time... well, you see how often that's come up lately. Not.)

And to continue on in the cheesy B-movie vein - you're getting bored with all the "quality" films by now, aren't you? - I highly recommend a movie called Netherbeast Incorporated, about corporate vampires (sort of). Don't bother looking for the trailer online - it's terrible. But the movie is a damn good time. Sort of Shaun of the Dead crossed with Office Space. With cannibalism. Yeah, that's about right.

Yay, Penn won for Milk. That makes me strangely happy, because normally I don't care.

I finally got Essential Avengers #1. Aw, it's so sweet. :) They were a prickly bunch from the beginning... yet they're always heaping servile praise on each other too, heh.

Hey, I was just thinking about writing you! But then I thought, aw, she's probabaly gonna be watching the Oscars...

I still haven't seen Milk yet, but I'm glad to hear Penn won. From everything I've seen, he really did summon a spirit with that role.

So glad you're reading the Essential Avengers. Isn't Cap just the most delicious mess? And I heart Tony's secretiveness so much.

Yeah, Cap's surprisingly labile. And his instant imprinting on little Rick Jones... and his vow to OMG GAIN HIS RESPECT... to avenge Bucky... to defeat Zemo... Steve is just this side of batty in these early stories. :D It's strange to hear Captain America ranting about bloody vengeance.

And I love how every time Tony gets a moment alone he starts the interior monologue about how people envy him his money and dashing good looks but little do they suspect that he is but an inch from death at all times etc etc. I want to shake him and say: damn, would it kill ya to maybe let your teammates in on this tragic burden of yours? Being stiff necked and secretive has been a defining trait for Tony from day one, I see. :D

That story with Cap's resurrection from the frozen ice and then the whole Zemo saga was actually the first Avengers I ever read. My brother had that issue in the house, and I read it over and over, complete with the WWII flashback to the origin of the Red Skull. Awesome. So that's probably always how I'll see Cap - disoriented and waking up in a new world where he has to find a new place for himself and prove his worth all over again. (And the Rick Jones obsession... OMG, reams could be written about how torn poor Rick is between his devotion to the Hulk, but then there's this new fellow who wants to be his bestest pal...)

Aw, Tony, Tony. So suave and aloof. Yes, he's a wonder. I just love that shot of him plugged into the console at Avengers mansion, his feet up and with a smoking jacket thrown over his chestplate.
