I got the same faux-parental-unit vibe of Xander and Buffy early in S7 on the show, and found it creepy. You described it perfectly, like he was doing it, and she didn't see it. But, here he also gets it when she reminds him what they are -- and aren't.
Buffy's words make me wonder what evil things she's seen lurking.
As for questions... hmm... I suppose I could ask what the deal was with the Potentials' families ("Hey Mom, Dad! I'm fifteen and heading off to California with this old British guy! That cool with you?"), but I'm paralyzed by not caring a whit about them. I'd be more interested in Giles (why Pod?) and Willow (why more guilt about moving on than, oh, murder?).
