I honestly felt that was true of Spike in the show -- he thought she was another one of his phantom visitors -- so I just pumped up the volume on the illusions to put Buffy in that state, too. That whole what's real?/what's unreal? aspect of the First really appealed to me, and I wanted to play around with it a bit more.
