I love how you sum this up. It all sounds so wonderfully schematic the way you describe it, although obviously I've revealed myself as just winging it by doing such a major rewrite. The characters just tell me what to say, I swear.

This is the heart of what I was going for - that they're both feeling their way toward something, in constant negotiation. Buffy is, I think, a very tough room for romance at this point, and by now, so is Spike, largely through having been involved with her, so it's all very Catch-22. But they do click instinctively, often - ironically enough - through the very process of fighting - so that's what I keep coming back to. They really do care about each other.
