Hello, Orwellian Nightmare

From [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia, via [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick: something to really get upset about, and to TAKE ACTION. NOW. Please.

The Senate is voting tomorrow on immigration legislation that includes a snuck-in version of the REAL ID Act, which would require everyone in the US to get special 'national identification' to get a job, get on a plane, or do pretty much anything in real life. This would be an unfunded federal mandate for states to enforce, meaning that the fed isn't sending any money and people would have to pay through the nose for this program. This is another way for the government to keep tabs on everything we do in our lives -- and charge us for it as well.

This webpage has information on what's at stake, what it will mean to you, and what you can do -- including a fax you can send your Senators today.

Thank you. And yeah, it's that kind of image that really sets me off about this - what part of history didn't these people sleep through?

Considering Shrub would've flunked out of school without Daddy's help and has - among others - a press secretary who claimed that the executive branch wasn't answerable to anyone (I guess he slept through the whole checks and balances lesson), it's not a surprise it wouldn't occur to any of them that this idea stinks to high heaven. Oh wait, dragging religion into the government is their thing. I guess I'm just an unpatriotic American - you know, with the dissenting from the government line. Oh wait - weren't the Founding Fathers dissenters? Where would we be if they hadn't? I'm just wacky thinking things like that, huh?!
