Nay or Yay

Am having one of those moments in which most of my flist is chatting about the new TV shows, most of which I feel grumpy about, and then I feel like a killjoy for showing up to grouch in that vein. Ugh. I'll probably restrict my complaining to my own journal for the most part from now on. I don't really like being negative. In general, I enjoy finding things that I like and pimping them hard instead. Really not in this to rain on other people's parades. (That said, I wouldn't be surprised or offended if there was some shrinkage in the number of people who've friended me - I'll still be plugging along on my BtVS fics, but otherwise, I'll proably be using this space to yak about comics - Toys is finally taking that class, so my interest in the medium is rising again - obscure sci-fi and horror films and cartoons and the like, and the occasional dose of politics. Possibly some cooking. BtVS love brought a lot of us here together, but aside from that, I'm afraid I may qualify even on LJ as a bit of a weirdo. Be warned.)

So anyway, in place of more bellyaching, let's have a PIMP!

This one's a comic book: JSA Classified, Featuring Power Girl. Solid superhero stuff, introspective in the way of early Buffy, accomplished, detailed art and the artist is female to boot! Punchy writing, standout artwork in classic 2D comics style, and excellent colors (the place where many modern comics unfortunately fall down - sometimes Photoshop effects are not your friends, especially when used to camouflage weak art). Also, the new Black Panther comic series is showing a lot of promise - the world is a better place for the fictional African nation of Wakanda. It's different. I like different.

Also, new Nip/Tuck in less than a week. I am so stoked.

Don't censor your grumpiness! Today I've been reading Peter Brook on the vital function of the critic -- which is to bitch. Without bitchy critics, the producers get lazy and feed us crap, so we either put up with crap, or go away, both of which kill the industry. I'd like a diversity of opinions on my flist, please.

Aw, thank you for the vote of support. Here, on this journal, I won't censor myself... well, much. (You probably won't hear me explain why I've never been able to really get into Firefly, for example, at least not until after Serenity releases, because I just don't feel the need to annoy that many of my friends.) But I was mostly talking about going over to comment on other people's journals with negative stuff, which kind of made me uncomfortable once I realized I was probably just harshing mellows unecessarily. I do agree it's important to complain - I'm just trying to find a balance of sorts.

Yeah, I feel that it's being unnecessarily provoking to tell someone "I hate that crappy show!" on their own LJ. Here, you can bitch as much as you want. I actually didn't get into "Firefly" until I was presented with the DVD set for Christmas. Then, scales fell from my eyes, or some such. I only watched "Stargate" after Ben Browder came on, and then I stopped watching when Claudia Black's guest-starring stopped. "Battlestar Galactica", "SGA"? No. I'm currently on a "COPS"/"Forensic Files"/"Cold Case"/"City Confidential" jag, but I think that's just because I like true crime.

But, I'll have to watch "Veronica Mars" to see Charisma Carpenter.

I don't feel too bad as of yet for slamming on brand-new shows that people haven't gotten all that attached to yet, but still. Probably best to curb that trend right now, I figure, keep my opinions close to home. Then people can decide whether they want to agree with my crappy taste or not.

My loyalties tend to vacilate a lot too - Stargate, I'm enjoying right now, but more in reruns rather than in new episodes, because of same reason as yours (no more Claudia Black), BSG's sort of waning on my horizon, and I can't get enough of COPS and Untold Stories of the ER. Otherwise, current TV, I barely keep up with anything - I hadn't even heard about Charisma on VM.

Oh, heck, I'm still refusing to watch new shows, except the ones with David and Nick and Christian---and I may watch James on "Smallville." I recently started watching "Dog, the Bounty Hunter." I'm weird, I know.

There's a show named "Dog, the Bounty Hunter"? I must see this amazing sight.

On right now, A & E. He's a bail bondsmen in Hawaii, gets the skippers with the aid of his nephew, wife, brother-in-law (I think). I just watched it for the first time tonight.

Darn! It's not on here. I must've just missed it. Now they're playing "Inked." Have to check next week.

At least it'll be "Criss Angel, Mindfreak" soon. That's Toys's current favorite. : )

I think I watch the crime shows because it's, uh, peculiarly comfortable.

I know the subtext, I suppose, about what's happening: how some of the people are acting out for the camera, but generally, the people are so focused on their own miseries that they don't notice the camera. How the cops are much better behaved because of video; and that the bail-bondsman, Dog, is so kindly towards even his retrieved clients because they're repeat customers. What makes probable cause for a traffic stop, and that. Like I said, I get to feel like an insider.

I think that "insider" feel is probably what drives a lot of the popularity of reality shows in general, but for most people, the insider effect is an illusion. For you, it's real. That must make it really surreal, especially with the true crime. I can only imagine.

Well, I'll be talking about cricket and children and cooking too, and a bit of gardening and politics and meanderings about the things that BtVS and cricket have in common (oh yes! all my obsessions are linked). Weirdo back at ya!

And I've got some things to say about the three films I've seen lately -- Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Herbie Fully Loaded (with the kids!).... surprised to find that Lindsay Lohan is quite a sweetheart.

[identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
You've seen the Herbie movie? I was reluctant to admit it, but I was intrigued. Do tell me more!

And the BtVS/cricket connection. Inquiring minds want to know. : )
