Smallville Stuff

Because it's about the only thing Toys and I stayed up late enough to watch last night, I figured I should mention it. .
So last week on Smallville, the instant that Ghost-Bo showed up, I yelled "look, they're doing Hamlet!" and further speculated that Ghost-Bo was probably Professor Shapechanger, duh. Because Clark just IS that guillible. True and true, as it turned out. Not a great episode, but who knew that John Schneider could do a credible Marsters impression? I'm so not used to thinking of Bo as being good actor. It's kind of disturbing me.
The idea of last week, though - should-Clark-kill-for-the-greater-good? - carried over to finale, with Should Clark Kill Lex? Because Lex is of course the one who gets taken over by the Spirit of Zod, released from the Phantom Zone (and yes, it looks just like the movie), even though it would've been way cooler IMHO if Zod had possessed Lionel, and more angsty if it fought in the face of Bo, but then apparently I don't have as much invested in the Clark-vs.-Lex standoff that the writers keep habitually banging on about. Yes, I know they end up enemies. Duh, we knew that from minute one. This kind of manufactured face-off really isn't necessary.
But we do get two things out of Possessed Lex. One, that he plays as a direct contrast to Clark's secrecy fetish by immediately telling Lana, his current SO, that he now has superpowers, and to underline this, later lays it out for Clark just in case he didn't get it - if Lex is honest to the people he loves, and Clark lies all the time, how can Clark claim to be the good guy? A good question - I have little hope that it'll be answered with anything useful, but I give kudos to the storytellers for at least putting it out there. And two, the end of the episode gives us a brief vision of Cool!Leather!Coat!Lex! on the roof of the Luthorcorp building, like something out of Highlander. And a big swoony passionate Lana kiss. Not that I care about Lana, but... woof. That Lex.
Clark was a total tool. Barely a bystander. It's the all-Lex show, baby.
The Marsters was woefully underused. Although there was one shot of him dressed like an airline pilot that I found strangely fetching. Aw. Must be the uniform. But excuse me, cough, wtf was up with that acronym for Brainac? BRAIN-inter-active-construct? Weak. And I agree with Toys that his powers are more like the Eradicator, which is a different character. Computer virus, puh-lease. "Y2K on steroids," Chloe says. Sadly, it's one of the best lines she gets this episode.
Lights going out in major cities automatically leads to gangs smashing cars with baseball bats. They're angry that the lights went out. Angry! GRRRRR!!!!
I could've lived without the Chloe menace. It was stupid and unecessary, and now I get to spend the summer worrying that she's being sexually assaulted. Thanks, guys. Or, actually, not. Fuck you, that's what I meant to say.
Yes, yes, Lionel/Martha. We know it's coming. Get on with it, already. (And I'm actually eager to see it, because they have real chemsitry, hotcha.) And stop hinting at Clark/Lois. We know that's coming too. It's like the Lex thing - you don't have to go on and on about it.
They're getting another season? Huh. I admit to being surprised.
All in all, not the best Smallville finale in the history of finales. Too much slow buildup. Too obvious that nothing was going to happen by the end of the ep. And indeed it didn't. For the big Clark/Lex fight, tune in next season. Yeah, right. (rolls eyes)
[ETA: I don't really make a habit of hanging out on TWOP anymore (too tiring), but the recaplet for this episode is totally effin' hilarious. KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!]
