Caffeine is a WONDERFUL THING. God, I love mornings. The whole day ahead of you, and with a nice hot mocha in the tummy, energy to burn. Neurons sparking. Ahh.

Doesn't it just make you wonder about the discovery of coffee beans and tea leaves, and how long it must've taken for humans to figure out the right dose? Primitive drug experimentation - stick a plant in your mouth, and find out what happens. Science, people!

Anyway. That thing, that I said above, about sparking neurons. *g*

I haven't posted in yonks, so I have a whole list of backed-up notes and recs and other business - in the interests of making things manageable, I'll just quickly rip through the list:

New Community
[livejournal.com profile] wip_out, dedicated to helping fanfic writers finish their languishing WIPs. It's the brainchild of the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] st_salieri, who asked me to be her co-moderator on the comm. Take a look, share your own to-do list, or just listen in as we try to formulate some working tips and tricks. C'mon, it'll be fun! Like a New Year's resolution-y thing.

Joooiiin ussssss...

Slightly Related to Above, As In, Kind of Like Writing Tips
part 1 and part 2 of things learned about writing from RPG campaigns, or role-playing games, and all of it so true. You know your story's on bad footing when the RPG test - how would a group of players react to this scenario? - doesn't pass muster, i.e, if you send people into a dark dungeon, you'd better have a good reason why nobody thinks to check for traps. (They're drunk and/or distracted is good for one use; after that, you're on your own.)

Another one from [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, an answer to the eternal question of what is 'canon' to you? The discussion mostly boils down to two essential topics: a) what you consider official, and, b) having made that determination, how constrained by it you feel, for fannish purposes. Since both are governed by personal taste, the end-of-the-day consensus for pretty much any fandom is what the most people accept as true... which is rather nicely populist, come to think of it, with the creator (and critics) as the "elite." Heh!

I ran across this one when I absolutely had no time to engage in the discussion but I'd bookmarked it as neato-keeno: [livejournal.com profile] ludditerobot's post about Blade Runner and Deckard's possible Replicant status. I'm impressed by the analysis, especially on the name consistencies.

Fic Recs
[livejournal.com profile] quinara's fic Resolution. It's a Buffy and Xander friendship fic written in response to the comics, and it really hits the spot for me - yes, this is the sort of thing I wanted to see. Sigh. Slightly related thoughts on writing styles and the BtVS comic )

Riding the Clutch by [livejournal.com profile] only_passenger. Hot, steamy, angsty, raw NC-17 Spike/Buffy. What, you need another reason to click? Really, really good. Also, if you're not following her story In All the World, you're missing out. It's a hardcore AU which makes Buffy's Sunnydale existence seem a bit like a children's story, but captures the essence of Spike/Buffy all the same. Disturbing, violent, erotic, and sublime. Go read.

Just For Fun
Interested in a pet duck? Well, y'know there's a website for that. Of course. There's also Goats.com. Have I mentioned Toys's recent goat obsession? Don't be surprised if I pipe up someday with the announcement that we'll be moving to the country to open a goat farm.

And finally, Wagner's Ring Cycle of Operas Summarized in Easy Fanspeak. Surprisingly incest-friendly!

(I post using my Doctor Block icon from Grindhouse in honor of having finally acquired the DVD from the used collection of our local King of Video Rental Stores, Le Video. Yay for being able to watch Planet Terror any time I want!)

I've missed so many birthdays, it's honestly embarrassing: [livejournal.com profile] botias, [livejournal.com profile] spikes_heart, [livejournal.com profile] pukajen, [livejournal.com profile] romanyg, [livejournal.com profile] dessert_first, [livejournal.com profile] pfeifferpack, [livejournal.com profile] lillianmorgan, [livejournal.com profile] ascian3, [livejournal.com profile] rikko_oko.... Very Happy Belated Birthdays to you all, and hopes for a great year ahead.

Good Christ, I'm behind on everything. I haven't even read any of the Bring Back the Porn Day entries on InsaneJournal. Something's clearly wrong with the world. Or I've just been too busy. Or both. Sigh...

[livejournal.com profile] coyote_william has a poll about the Slayer activiation spell: good idea or bad, morally speaking? (Not just good/bad in terms of plot device, in other words.) I've contributed to this thread a lot; I have big honking problems with "Chosen" which I apparently still need to get off my chest. Isn't it amazing how some things will nearly always draw you back into the same damn conversations?

Fic rec: We Who Are About to Die, a Spike & Anya conversation on the night before the battle of "Chosen." Really like this one, the knowing quality of it. Sublime.

More dribs and drabs, some links picked up from the Flist )

I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] ruuger's Buffy is the Hero, Dammit! ficathon. Because I am insane, and don't have enough WIPs to work on. And I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] seraphcelene's Fic Meta-a-Thon too. Because I am INSANE. Clearly.

But on that note:

This is a total crack theory I'm posting just for the hell of it, because yesterday Toys and I were discussing the Greatest Hits of Retcons and Fakeouts in the World of Comic Books (No, there's no list I can point to right now, but it's not impossible that we'll make one. Someday), and based on that discussion, here's the genius (insert snort here) idea we came up with about how the Buffy Season 8 Willow vs. Amy storyline ought to go. Boggle at the possibilities of hardcore comics crack storytelling! )

I warned you it was a crack theory. If this actually happens in the book... well, I don't know what I'd do. Get a job in comics! *g*

I'm Back!

... from the Palm Springs trip, and it might be awhile before I'm fully caught up, but first off, a huge THANK YOU to [livejournal.com profile] herself_nyc for the extra months of paid LJ time - the best motivation there is to get me to do more writing. You're the best, sweetie! (smooch)

There'll be more to come about the desert-y trip, along with a few pictures, but in the meantime, I'm sure you've all been breathless to hear my reactions to the Buffy Season 8 comic. Buffy Season 8, Issue 3, or 'That One With the Picture of the S/B/A Threesome' )

After probably too much thought, I think I've managed to nail down what's been bugging me most about the Buffy Season 8 comic. And surprise, it's not about Buffy. Read more... )
thedeadlyhook: (Fandom has Spandex by Mariusgirl)
Lovely, lovely Saturday and Operation Overdrive. I do adore the spandex sometimes.

*commerical break* (Aw, I see that The Ten Commandments is playing tonight. Normally, I wouldn't be able to resist that sucker, because of the siren call of Huge Epic with young Heston (rowr) and Yul Brynner (ROWR!), but I've got a housewarming party to attend. Moses will have to part the Red Sea without me, sigh.)

For those following commentary on the Buffy Season 8 comic, [livejournal.com profile] elisi has collected a hefty list of reviews here.

Okay, so either I am stupid, or LJ has made it harder to find out when people's birthdays are. It was about the only thing I liked about that "My LJ" page, that it had a quick list for b-days. So unless I figure out this new damn system, I'm probably doomed to be eternally clueless and behind.

That said...

A Belated Very Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] irfikos and [livejournal.com profile] azdak!!!

In other news, it's been one of those weeks in which I keep stumbling across fascinating conversations at the precise moments when I have the least amount of energy for talking. I'm going to have to get in the habit of just linking when this happens, because at least then I'll remember what smart people got up to while I was out of commission feeling stupid.

[livejournal.com profile] rahirah had a great post about character positioning - alpha/beta, dom/sub, etc. - and there's some great followup in the comments about fanfic's tendencies toward portraying 'ships along those lines, whether the canon (when applicable) supports it or not. Food for thought there about what kind of power dynamics writers and readers are drawn to, or respond to.

I have to admit here I wasn't originally intending to read the Buffy Season 8 comic (insert belly laugh here about how "canon" I consider these comics), but Toys wanted to see it, so we've checked out the first two issues, and I have been enjoying talking about it through various posts on my flist, so at least I've gotten that much out of it. [livejournal.com profile] molly_may has said most of what I wanted to say about issue 2 here, although I'll add a couple more cents in easy bullet form: Spoilers for Buffy Season 8 Comic Through Issue 2 )

A Very Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] dessert_first and to [livejournal.com profile] romanyg!!

Here's an interesting exercise in perspective: while walking through the park today, Toys and I came across a feral cat sitting in some dead leaves. Strangely close to the footpath. We thought it might be hurt, and approached. But lo and behold, the cat wasn't hurt - it was, in fact, "playing with," as cats do, a very teeny-tiny mouse. What we'd thought was a victim was, in fact, a victimizer! (The mouse got away because we intimidated the cat enough to back off, so that's a story about the unintentional effects of blundering intervention, I guess.)

Which brings me to a string of interconnected thoughts. Who Wants to Be A Superhero? - Spoilers for the Season Finale )

That, though, leads me to thinking about Buffy, so I'm gonna put that under a separate cut.

I wish to god sometimes I could record the lunch and/or dinner conversations I have with [livejournal.com profile] toysdream. We end up getting into these long, involved discussions that go all over the place, and where everything connects to everything else. It explains a lot about how I (and he) think. Toys and The Deadly Hook Talk Over Lunch )
thedeadlyhook: (Default)
First off, hello and thanks to all the new peeps who have stopped by my LJ over the last few days, and to new Friends - honestly, I never really expected to get such response to either that last little ramble or any of my recent fic efforts. That said, I can't say I hate the attention, so just a big thanks to everyone who took the time to drop a comment or get into a debate. You've really made my day. Or last few days, more like it.

New business: [livejournal.com profile] eurydice72 is running a William ficathon. I'm such a latecomer to these things that the whole concept of ficathons is still kinda novel to me, so I'm sorely tempted. As if I don't already have enough WIPs on my plate. (grumble, grumble) Thoughts About William )

Semi-related side note while I'm doing the William ponder: iTunes threw some Smiths at me this morning, reminding me of a theory I'd had back when I'd first heard that there was going to be a BtVS musical. I'd thought it likely the music would be covers instead of original pieces, and I'd predicted that surely Spike would sing "I Know It's Over" from The Queen is Dead album - pretty obvious from the lyrics why I thought so. (I'd also note the previous song on that record, "Frankly, Mr Shankly," has a line about "I didn't know you wrote such bloody awful poetry"... maybe somewhere in my head William ended up crosspolinated with Morrissey.) Anyway, I'd also guessed there might be something in there from The Music Man, and lo and behold, we did get a little name-check in the actual episode - "76 bloody trombones." But why The Music Man? For those not familiar... You Are What You Play )
