Counting...
Jul. 13th, 2004 11:52 amIt's amazing, the difference between how I feel when I'm in a writerly mood and when I'm not. I'm sure it has something to do with overall energy, but when I'm on, just about anything seems worthy of being immortalized in print. For instance, in looking over the "If I Were..." meme, Toys came up with this thing on numbers that I've been trying to nag him to post on his own journal, but since he's being a big staller, this is the kind of typical stuff Toys's head barfs out daily:
(at local coffeehouse)
Toys: Why'd you pick number 8?
TDH: I like the shape, mostly.
Toys: It's kind of boring, though. Multiples of 2. Same goes for 9. Multiples of 3. Ho-hum. I were a number, I think I'd be "12."
TDH: Why 12?
Toys: Because there's something so solid about it, yet it's multilayered. It's a multiple of 4 and of 3.
TDH: I see. So it's solid because it's a multiple of 4?
Toys: Four is stable, but kind of too stable. Multiples of 2. It's kinda boring.
TDH: Like a table.
Toys: Yes, but ah, then there's the 3. Three seems mysterious, but it's an illusion. It's really in perfect balance.
TDH: You mean like a tripod or something.
Toys: Exactly. Add those two together and you get something fascinating. Twelve.
TDH: So your take on numbers is kind of a personality thing, or a numerology thing?
Toys: Kind of a personality thing. I mean, look at numbers like 5 or 7. Sharp and scary. Or the lower prime numbers like 11. Freaky. Like, what can you do with 11? But you know what's really freaky? Ten.
TDH: Ten?
Toys: The number 10. People think it's all rational and safe. Basis for our number system, right? But underneath it, there are two fives lurking, all pointy, like fours with something extra hanging off them. They're not divisible by anything. They're like guerillas. It's like, 10 looks like George Washington, but it really has a couple of Che Guaverezs hiding under it.
TDH: Like under a tent? With knives?
Toys: Exactly.
