Why Isn't Election Day a Holiday?
Nov. 4th, 2008 08:13 amSeriously, why is that? Because I've missed elections in the past - not national ones, but a few locals - because of the need to get to work, and there's some lines out there, let me tell you. Thank god I got up early.
My polling place was a cafe right around the corner from our apartment. The line there wasn't as long as the cafe at the other end of our street (yes, we have two polling places within about three blocks of each other - go figure), because they had the sense of mind to open up all the tables to voters so you didn't have to wait for one of the little plastic privacy booths. With a room full of people all silently scribbling with their heads down, the whole experience was rather like taking a test, like the SAT. (Our district is voting with those paper ballots where you connect the lines of an arrow pointing to your choice - a little more complicated than filling in black circles with your pencil, but much the same vibe.) I did get a kick out of a father one table over who brought his kids along to share the experience, and the kids kept telling him to "vote NO on that one, dad!" (California has a lot of local proposals, always - three pages worth in this case before you could even get to the main event.)
But now, of course, comes the hard part. And again to why the hell isn't this a holiday? But with luck, cross fingers, please please please, by the end of the day there'll be reason to celebrate. And just in case: NO ON PROP. 8. YES ON PROP. 2.
As usual, I'm behind as all hell on LJ - I've missed a ton of birthdays. I hope you all had the happiest of days, sweeties!
This Saturday was also the birthday of my ultra-honey
toysdream, who people constantly tell him doesn't look as old as he really is. He claims it's the irresponsibility of being a starving artist at his age that keeps him looking young. : ) Kisses and hugs to you, my darling boy.
As is becoming tediously common for me, I was too busy this month to use more than a couple of my Halloween icons. : ( And I didn't make any of those horror-movie recommendation posts I planned on, sigh. But at least Toys and I made it to Alternative Press Expo this year, where we met up with a bunch of friends we hadn't seen in awhile, who (in combination with some urging from attendees of our traditional Halloween party) convinced him to get a Facebook. So yay for connectivity there, at least.
Get out the vote, yo!
