I don't agree that Season 5 worked well as an entire story arc. The tone in the story changed too drastically for me -especially after Fred's death. And there were too many plot holes to satisfy me.
But I must heartily agree with the writer that Illyria's presence on the show was irrevelant. And so was Fred's presence. Poor Amy Acker. Stuck with two characters that didn't really contribute much to the Season 5 story.
