I was really trying to throw in a little reminder here of how much of their history is in these kinds places and ended up kind of echoing "Sleeper," where he asks her whether she won't come down into the basement with him. That moment, one of their many confrontations on stairs, really got to me for some reason.
And the agonizing thing about her leaving him in the basement too is that Buffy really didn't have a better practical choice. She had to leave him somewhere out of the sun, couldn't leave the lights on for someone to notice and find him, and she had to leave to get blood. Not that of that helps Spike much...
