Angel's "big brass testes" in the final episode seem to be proven out by his ability to be a bigger martyr than anyone else. (Cup of Perpetual Torment indeed!)
I guess if we Deconstructed AtS we'd be forced to admit that Joss hasn't escaped his Christian heritage to anything like the extent that (h)we would like to think. Kind of like Deconstructing the Feminist Message ;-) There is a respectable Protestant tradition (Qietism) that argues that what you achieve is much less important than the state of your soul, which fits in nicely with the view that as long as you sacrifice yourself, it doesn't matter if the sacrifice actually *achieves* anything.
