I'm sure thedeadlyhook can her explain her thoughts much better than I can, but (bear with me as I go off on a flying reply) what always annoyed me about the soul topic was that it seemed a convenient way to act as a band-aid rather than explore the actual meaning of having a soul. That and I'm eternally endeared to S6 Spike and he didn't have a soul but ::cough:: that could be something wrong with me.
As well, I'm sure I've read kassto's thoughts on this before but her reply earlier: WHen the New York Times asked Joss what a soul meant, in terms of his shows, since it meant one thing for Angel, and yet SPike seemed to be trying to be good without one, Joss's reply was that the soul was whatever the plot needed it to be at any point in time. seemed to sum up for me some of the frustrations. More important seems to be having a conscience and how a character feels about and learns from things; having a soul is rather esoteric in the Jossverse. That, and I've probably read too much fanfic, so everything's become a giant pile of combined mush in my brain.
