I tend to see it more like that scene in Airheads, where Brendon Fraser reveals to a crowd of hardened headbangers that he used to be a geek in high school. Spike sets an example for some tough bar crowd that it's okay to be a poetry-writing mama's boy whilst still wearing your leather-clad heart on your sleeve. Rock 'n' roll!
It seems to me that he's vesting his hopes in Connor rather than in the broader society of do-gooders.
Right, that's probably fair. Although since the kid isn't exactly following in the family business, then it does sort of look like Angel's left the whole "helping the helpless" out in the cold. Who's gonna save all those ignorant twits wandering around dark LA alleys now? (throws up hands) Guess it's up to you to save your own sorry ass from now on, eh? Self-determination and all that. Or an army of Slayers, maybe...
