Right there with you that Mei's choices were pretty much no difference in HoFD - she was trapped either way, as was everyone in the film, by their various factions. I found the ending to be an interesting illustration of this, the way people find themselves in traps, or even make their own traps for themselves through their emotions. I found it psychologically interesting, but yeah, nowhere near the scope of Hero.
