That Old Black Magic..
Jan. 10th, 2004 02:12 pmRead a few more chapters of the aforementioned "Journeys: Awakenings," by Mary S. Goodbye to the lame magic addiction plotline, hello to the much more interesting power addiction issues that had been so strongly foreshadowed in Seasons 4-6... until "Wrecked" took a sudden left turn and told us that magic gets you high. Right. So if you're looking for a fic that examines Willow's role in the group, and her feelings about it (legitimate issues about being taken for granted as a "sidekick" that have been allowed to fester into bitter resentment), this is your fic.Heck, even Rack is cool in this story!
That Willow's story ended up being so sidelined in Season 6, and then completely dropped in Season 7, is one of my many hot-button off-pissing items. Why did we never get a real reconciliation scene between Willow and Buffy after the resurrection, or the world-destroying thing? Are we to assume that Buffy never really did forgive her, and that Willow was just too useful or too dangerous to risk upsetting? (Same question holds in my mind for Buffy's feelings re: Spike.) All we got was that oddly stilted scene in "Same Time, Same Place," where Willow says, "It's nice to be forgiven," and Buffy regards her with this tight-lipped expression as if she'd actually said, "It's nice to have people take you back in after you've tried to kill them, although you wouldn't know anything about that, would you, Buffy?" It's one of the many S7 moments where the viewer just has to do waaay too much work on interpretation.
But never mind that now - read Mary's fic instead! See the gang realize that, gee, Willow's been very important to the group! Maybe Buffy isn't actually "alone" in her calling! Conversely, Mary makes the excellent point that Buffy's friends are equally an asset and an avenue of entry for her enemies - something we haven't really seen explored in depth since Season 4, and I'd originally thought was going to be explored more in S7, with the First Evil whispering in everyone's ear. Only it didn't, and... oh well.
