Nov. 2nd, 2004 10:23 amWell, the line at my polling place wasn't at all long, although our neighborhood seems to feature polling places about every four blocks, including the coffee house I go to every morning. And that wasn't even my place, actually - I was sent to a public school only a block away from our apartment, an around-the-corner hike. All in all, the process took me about ten mintues. Got the sticker and everything. No ID check, no "challengers," no fuss. That was a nice surprise.
The actual ballot cards in our district are kind of fun - not the punch-style or SAT-like fill-the-circle, but a draw-a-line-connecting-the-arrow-pointing-to-your-candidate type, for which they provide you a felt-tip marker. When you're done, you get to feed your cards into the scanning machine yourself (this gives a nice feeling of accomplisment when you hear the little ding and get the green light). Thanks to a buttload of local initiatives, we had four huge cards to fill out, most of them front and back. I brought along my own handwritten cheat sheet and just went down the list.
So, thank heaven, the process is finally on. From here on in, it's just the waiting. Toys and I plan to attend a sort of wait-out-the-polls party tonight in North Beach, where I anticipate getting a little drunk, one way or the other. I remain hopeful of the happy kind. Whoop whoop!
