Oh, lovely. Sci-Fi Channel is playing a Battlestar Galactica marathon - the '70s series, not the remake - and unless I'm mistaken, the one that's currently airing on the roster is the pilots-get-the-plague episode that forces the fleet to (gasp!) train female pilots! And oh, ho ho ho, let's get a look at all the girls in form-fitting bodysuits that we never see the men have to wear, although there's a technical reason, I'm sure ("tightie flighties," chimes in Toys from the sidelines, coffee in hand, bed hair - he sleeps in on non-school days, poor thing). Really, that was the '70s, peeps. We Shall Not Let Go of Our Gender Stereotypes, even in the face of catacylsm. See! Giggling women at a briefing mission! Hear! Squeals of confusion when trying to pilot aircraft! (Piloting is hard!) Witness! Apollo defending his right to be king of the protective cave bear clan when wife-to-be Jane Seymour wants to pilot shuttles, never mind the fact that all of them could die at any time if the Cylons find them. I mean, I do and did love this show dearly, but yeesh. It was ridiculous to me at the time, and I was a kid then. It is to laff, the sexism of our forebears, yes? Haw haw.
