Huzzah, it's Halloween! First costume seen today, while on my way back from my morning walk with a coffee - Supergirl. My eyes were on the sidewalk, so I saw her shiny red boots first and glanced up too late to catch sight of her face, but I still think it's a good omen. Go Girl Power.

We had our traditional Halloween video party on Saturday. I pooped myself out with a frenzy of housecleaning for the party (and subsequent allergic reaction to all the dust I stirred up) and have been recovering ever since. I unfortunately picked a couple of duds for video viewing - The Beast Must Die turned out to have a very dull middle section (the faded VHS copy I found probably didn't help) and the Italian space-horror fiilm Contamination had a couple of funny splatter moments, but then another long, dry spell in the middle. Re-Animator, though, back by popular request, was a hit, as was Hercules in the Haunted World (Italian director Mario Bava gives ancient Greece a lot of theatrical gel lighting, and Reg Park shows you what muscles used to look like before steroids - treat yourself, it's worth it!) and John Landis's Masters of Horror entry "Deer Woman," which I think I've raved about in this space before. Scary and funny, always a winning one-two punch. One of our pals came to the party dressed like a movie-ready replica of Edgar Allan Poe, and now I've got this compulsion to review all those Roger Corman Poe films. Gorgeous looking, at the very least, and Vincent Price at his smoothest, handsomest best. Like a gourmet dinner for the eyes.

And the History Channel is all up in the geneology of Dracula today, with some great scenic footage of Trannsylvannia and the remains of Castle Dracula, etc. and shows about the historical and archelogical basis of monsters. Educational and fun!

I'm still keeping up with Heroes, although I'd be lying if I said that I was mesmerized by anyone's story-thus-far except for Hiro's. small spoiler speculation for the episode )

Finally caught Friday Night Lights, and although I can see that it's a quality show, it's not for me. My First Impresssions of Friday Night Lights )

This is why I don't watch a lot of TV. I honestly have an easier time with stories that have an outrageous fantasy element thrown in there than "real life" dramas. Plus, I hated high school. Really hated it. It takes a lot to make me go back, even in fiction.
