I ventured out last night at dusk to check out our neighborhood trick-or-treaters, since our apartment doesn't get any coming to the door. The various Chinese bakeries and tapioca tea shops all hand out treats to kids in costume, so there were quite a few out in force - ninjas and witches and fairy princesses (lots of fairy princesses) and little boys dressed like Superman, in those outfits that have the fake muscles. So cute! Plus I saw three separate Power Ranger outfits, one of them the Blue SPD ranger, which made me smile. Awww...
But the funniest sighting was probably a group of teenage girls I saw, who'd decided to do low-stress versions of the fairy princess getup over their day clothes, just wearing their tutus and angel wings tacked onto the outside of their regular jeans and sweater. Ironic! Well, like, duh, I'm a fairy princess, can't you tell? *gumsnap*
We met up with MechMan and ActionGirl for dinner later in the Haight, at Magnolia, a nice brewpub, and saw quite a few fun adult costumes, such as a very realistic Michael Meyers and a couple of dudes dressed like The Monarch's henchmen from The Venture Bros. The restaurant waitressses all had Heidi costumes (!). I'd thrown together a sort of goofy little-girl outfit with the world's slouchiest red tights, a red-and-white checked dress I used to wear when the babydoll dress had been a style (late '80s, early '90s, I forget), and annoying little ponytails in my hair, and that was that. But next year, I'll be more prepared, yo, because ActionGirl and I plan to hit the Halloween Superstsore sales and stock up. For costume fun, photo purposes, and more, you can't beat good bargains on props and wigs. I seriously think I'll need a theatrical trunk someday to fill with this stuff. It never fails to come in handy.
Halloween is over way too soon. I still have a pumpkin that needs carving. And recipes to help me dispose of the insides.
