Okay, because
fer1213 made me, I fell for the five questions meme. I'm answering Fer's questions, then the rest seems to go all chain-lettery, where then I'm supposed to ask you five new questions that you can then answer in your own journal. But we can continue that part only if you feel the need - I'm terrible at these meme things. Anyway...
1. Where are you from originally and how did you get to San Francisco?
Originally, I'm from Michigan. Drove out here with a friend in the late '80s in one of those across-the-country make-or-break moves. Money in the pocket from the relatives and I figured I'd find some kind of job. Did, and San Francisco became home. Still here. Not likely to live anywhere else in the U.S. except NYC. I grew up small town and found I need big city.
2. Did you start by watching "Buffy" and what did you think of AtS when you started watching it?
Yes, Toys and I started watching BtVS in Season 2 - the first ep I ever saw was "Go Fish," in which I remember thinking something like, "woo, that guy in the Speedo is pretty hot." Since I had no expectations and love horror movies I rather liked that episode. Surprise, surprise when subsequent ones turned out to be even better. I didn't see most Season 1 eps and some early Season 2 until FX went into reruns, and I found I really liked the early eps, even stuff like "I Robot, You Jane," which was basically a variant on that X-Files plot where serial killers scout their victims on the Internet. Fascinating cultural artifact of early 'Net paranoia...
On AtS... well, to be honest, when Toys and I originally watched Season 1, we thought "uh, this is just Forever Knight crossed with The X-Files. And we've seen those shows." I was faintly amused by Cordelia, as I always am, but thought Angel was a pretty boring lead and sort of a pompous ass. We tuned in for the Spike episode - my thoughts being, "WTF, since when is Spike stupid?" then "WTF, why would Angel destroy the Gem of Amara, and since when is he stupid?" - and the Buffy crossover ep, which I outright hated for its treacly schmoop and the fact that again, Angel did something I thought was absolutely retarded, which was giving up his humanity to "save" Buffy. Barf. Oddly enough, though, revisiting Season 1, Toys and I were shocked how much we liked it, since it seemed to pick right up where Buffy Season 7 left off - with the idea, stated by Doyle, that Angel needed to connect to people so he wouldn't become totally alienated from those he's trying to save. So AtS Seasons 1-2 have notched up severely in my ranking as favorites, although S4 really dings that bell too. The series' end? I got nuthin'. I'll stick with "Epiphany," thanks.
3. What is your "official" profession?
Right now? Bum. I do freelance editing and writing work. Eventually I'll come up with another answer, but for the moment, I'm "between careers," as they say.
4. What is it like having you SO also on LiveJournal with similar interests and friends lists? Are there things you lock from him?
I don't lock anything from Toys. He reads my Friends list, and in fact, got into LJ altogether from doing that, because he wanted to see what I was up to. I think LJ has become his diversion from his own job stuff - I know it's how he got sucked into reading (and writing) fanfic, because he never used to, even though I read tons of it. But now that it's right there on my list, he'll read it and join in discussions. It's like, we had plenty to talk about before, and now we have this to talk about too. It's been kind of interesting to watch this develop, especially now that he has friends on his list that I don't have, and reads all these comics blogs. Now I'm going to have to start reading his list.
5. Did your mom ever give you words to live by and, if so, what are they?
Actually, not that I can think of. My mom died when I was thirteen. I do remember her singing Irish lullabies to me, including the "Tura, lura, lura" song Angel sings to Connor on AtS, unless I hallucinated that. And I have very strong memories of her - she taught me to read - but not "words to live by." If I had any of those, I probably got them from books and/or TV - I was the classic bookworm kid.

Hee. My thoughts were, why is he so vile? Honestly, in 'In the Dark' (one of the few episode names I know), it's the only time I truly have hated Spike. When he taunts Angel with the knowledge that his torturerer has a thing for kids and he seems to find to this humorous - now that is evil.
I actually liked AtS from the first episode. Of course, I had just started watching Buffy so I had no way to compare the two.

Date: 2004-09-16 07:20 pm (UTC)Like I said, Toys never used to read the fanfic. He's only recently started to read it, which totally suprised me. I started reading it after "The Gift," and between then and now I think I only got him to read one story. I guess it was just the looking-over-my-shoulder factor that finally did him.
Funny thing on AtS - on review, Toys and I realized how much of the series we actually had watched, but not archived away mentally like we did for Buffy. Like, do I know episode titles for Angel eps? Not so much. So yeah, I guess Buffy is still the show. Which probably explains the extent of my bitter about how much I didn't like the ending, sigh...

Over to you.
