Guess whose iBook is on Logic Board failure No. 3?

So yes, I'm back to using Toys's desktop machine and/or my backup laptop, an Old Tyme G3 with a busted keyboard and no battery power. So I'll probably be a little less accessible over the next week or so, sigh. It's as if the universe decided I was having too much fun with the writing lately...

Ah, I can remember the days back when Apple had never done a product recall... damn, and I didn't think I'd feel so old at 20. ;o) Such is life. Here's hoping they make with the quicky quicky with the replacement.

From another Mac user, albeit a slightly luckier one so far (this Old Tyme G3 at least has a functional keyboard, even if battery power is but a distant memory and it's on its third hard drive; meanwhile, my Dad's iBook doesn't recognise the trackpad anymore... still, not too bad...)

... Crap. I just jinxed it, didn't I?

I can remember those days too... sigh...

How much did it cost you to have the hard drive repaired? I've put off trying to get the keyboard fixed because I'm sure it would be prohibitively expensive, but maybe...

Although I'd forgotten how much I hated browsing in IE. God, what a buggy mess. In some ways, OS9 is still superior to OSX, but I can't put the Internet compatibility in there as one of those ways. Grah...

I've still got the receipts around here somewhere... something like $Au350 for the hard disk (brand new 40GB Fujitsu, but 10 and 20GB weren't much cheaper) if memory serves (it's 2am where I am right now, it probably isn't serving very well...), plus $Au55 labour. Keyboards are a bit less, (≈$Au300, labour included, but that was before I found the guy who did my hard drive so it ought to be possible to get it done cheaper) I think.

As for IE, OMG Teh Evol. There has to be something else out there... an old version of Mozilla or something?

Argh... that still sounds like more than the machine is even worth. Although having to shell out for a new one isn't such a wonderful option either. (grumbles)

I've never tried Mozilla. When I upgraded to Safari it was a big deal for me. But I guess maybe now's the time to see what I can download...

Thanks for the cost figures.

I hope not, I got ripped off when I bought it otherwise... ;o) (just to clarify: I had one with a dud keyboard which got stolen, and bought another out of the classifieds which later turned out to have a dud hard drive.) Seriously, it's amazing what second-hand Macs go for. Great if you're selling, not so hot if you're buying. Especially for us creative types who are supposed to be there main target market, which explains why they price to our range.

As for the browsers... it's no big deal. All you need to understand is that Bill Gates is Satan. At least, that's what they keep telling me...

So, I suppose between Toys' crazy deadlines, and your broken laptop, we can expect much in the way of epic battles for computer time? Preferably in the form or some sort of oil wrestling? No?

Thanks. I'm actually kinda boggled by this whole thing. I mean, I hardly thought that was a particularly insightful post, but go figure.

Oh, fuck! Mine, too! The second logicboard finally gave up the ghost last night. Good thing it has been a backup for ages while I moved on to PC land.

God, I hate macs.

I actually love Macs - they're the only computers I've ever used - but Steve Jobs owes me a personal apology for this one. Christ, I long for the days when Macs never crashed, ever.

They have the balls to still make that claim, too.

My PC has yet to crap out on me and chew through logicboards like candy, so I'm in their camp for now.
