The Icons and How to Swing Them

Working on the latest chapter, I came into the sudden realization that I had to have Angel icons. Mmm, Angel. Specifically, Angel and Spike icons. Because these guys are the roadshow which are sorta-kinda taking over my Spuffy fic, just for the moment, and you so gotta run with it when the muse sends you there, yo? Anyway, my icon hunt reminded me of amavel_bel's marvelous AtS Season 5 icons. Seriouly, these are the bestest fun. I'm sure others have pimped them, but that's hardly a reason not to do it again.

I'm having an odd little crisis over the whole icon thing, actually. To be perfectly honest, I'm not really all that sure how LJ icons work - looks like, from some older entries I've gone back to view, that LJ won't display an icon anymore if it's not in your current folder, which would mean then that the bulk of my fun icons will just show up as blanks when my paid time runs out, sob. Is the only way around this just to change your "default" icon all the time to suit one's mood? I guess I could live with that, although I'm awfully fond of my custom Cordelia that zerographic made me... or if you choose "no default," does the LJ just pick icons at random? That would be an okay option, except for the not-appropriate for all ages ones. What to do?

hey there! The way it works is when your time runs out for user pics it will default to your well new default. So all old posts ought to have your current default icon set. I change my default icon all the time. Of course, I have three measly pictures and am OCD like that ;)

If you choose "no default" then you will have a post with no icon, only your name. I guess I'm not sure what you don't know and don't want to talk down: is it not knowing how to change default? Not knowing how to load new ones?

Thanks! You've answered most of my questions - the 'no default' thing was really puzzling me, as was why certain icons just seemed to disappear and leave a blank. I guess that's just because the server can't find the one I originally used, although it should just go to the default then, right?

I guess just changing the default works best then. Shoot. I was kind of liking the part where I could pick the icon to go with the comment or post, but I guess that's what the mood themes are for.

You aren't changing your default with every post are you? Click on the drop-down box where it currently says "(default)." There's all the icons you have loaded right now. The exception is any icons that you have not given keywords too. Those will not appear on the list

Yeah, I was selecting icons from the pull-down list - I just started noticing how ones that I didn't have in the directory any more weren't showing up in older posts, which made me sorta go "huh?" I guess technically my default should have shown up there instead, but for some reason it wasn't, thus the original question. But thanks to you guys, I think I'm slowly figuring this stuff out.

Re. what to do with only three icons - avrelia said that she has two favourite icons that she'll never part from and changes her default as it suits her. This seems the most sensible way of doing it.

As for Angel and Spike icons, here's one of my favourites!

I guess that sounds like the most sensible course of action, then, just changing the default from time to time. You'd think I'd've gotten all this LJ tech stuff figured out by now.

Obviously it just didn't occur to me to, like, consult the FAQ! D'oh! Of course there's all the answers written right there in black and white - what's wrong with me that I can't figure out simple instructions? (bangs head) Gahh.. anyway, thanks.

I just had to point to that icon batch - I swear they made me feel downright greedy - "I'll take this one and this one and OOH this one! Ooh Gunn! OOOHH ILLYRIA! OOOHHH LORNE'S READING YOUR MIND!"

See, this is why I need many icons and the ability to change them at all times.
