I'm doing this in pieces, because I know that at least that way, I'll get it done.

This is a horrifically late entry to [livejournal.com profile] eurydice72's William Ficathon. It's for [livejournal.com profile] herself_nyc, who requested "anything, with Buffy if possible, not fluffy," only to avoid "Victorian details you're not sure of." I struggled some time with my original plot bunny if you're interested ) but my period William story ended up turning into more of a modern Spike story with a twist... and then it just snowballed on its own, as my stories are wont to do. I'm somewhat cheating to start with Spike and not William, but weirdly enough, this is actually my first story ever written in Spike's POV.

So anyway, off and running with a short intro for now, more to come later. Set rather loosely somewhere later in my own unfinished WIP, Does It Have to Mean Something?, a sort of minor AU from the events there, post-"Not Fade Away." There's pretty much nothing you need to know from that story, though, other than Spike needs help with getting a spell removed. (And please, forgive the boring title.) The Center, Part 1 )

Okay, for reasons I won't go deeply into, I'm watching the Knight Rider marathon on Sci-Fi Channel whilst working on fic. The episode of the moment is set in San Francisco, and so far I've been treated to Kit the Wonder Car crossing the Golden Gate Bridge to the sounds of the Jacksons' song "Torture" (?), tooling in endless circles around Fort Mason, chasing another wonder car through Potrero Hill (which is usually where you see SF car chases, since it's less trouble to clear the streets there than downtown, plus the hills are just as tall but the streets wider), and the always impressive Blaxploitation leading man Jim Brown as a prison escapee being set up to take on Our Hero Michael, the big-haired and oh-so-young David Hasselhoff, who in just the last episode, stunned us all with his almost-singing-career as a softcover New Waver. The "villains" of this piece include a lot of overdressed people standing over banks of computers that no doubt looked high-tech then, and includes a typical '80s femme fatale - tight dresses with big shoulders and cinch belts. You know, like the chick in V. This is downright manic. Hasslehoff is even sort of appealing for being so big and football linebacker-y.

And to think, I turned my nose up at this show at the time because it was too "guy" with all the car fetishizing. Who knew.

More exposition. All will become clearer as we go. The Center, Part 2 )

I seem to be rather spamming today. It's because Toys is out of town, and I'm trying to keep the loneliness at bay by writing as much as possible.

Links, because I've been finding all sorts of fun stuff doing on-the-fly research: A History of the London Underground, in helpful tables, including station construction and opening dates. Even more fun, Disused Stations on the London Underground. This is a great site. For Neverwhere readers/viewers intrigued by the closed British Museum station or the idea that there really are shepherds at Shepherd's Bush, it's the equivalent of finding leprechaun's gold. What I wouldn't give to go on a (echoing spooky voice) underground tour of the deep levels! Mwha ha ha ha ha!

Another short chapter. After this, things get interesting. Previous parts here. The Center, Part 3 )
